News... but not as you know it I made a list at the beginning of the year of places I wanted to explore all over New England. The world has changed forever, and sadly things will probably never go back to the way they used to be. But that time was not to last. What makes the abandoned camp interesting is that most of it’s old structures are made of wood. Drinking is not the answer. Luckily, we had mapped out our route better this time. It is very dark inside, and the floor is coated in garbage. Inside the jailhouse are some old fire logs and a few stacks of bygone newspapers. And for my 29th birthday, I wanted to go see a place that I have always wanted to cover. From here, these railroads carried goods and passengers all across New England for many years. And the Salmon River forest is always so very teeming with life. Antoinette Bramare and Andre Riela became quite the talk of the town wherever they went after striking it rich. It can be accessed through the air duct or from the outside. It was first described to me by an old friend as a train station for the old railway. I found that to be kind of strange. This was my first trip back since January. I shoot hospitals, jails, schools, rail tunnels, sewers -- anything that looks interesting in New England and outside as well. One by one, the great mills of Thread City shuttered their doors. Though most of the castle now lies in ruin, what struck Lassie and Wilk the most was the so called “Stairway to Heaven.” This winding stone staircase is the only truly defining feature left of this former relic. If you do your research, follow the directions, and crack the code you will find this place no problem. It was here that we hiked to the abandoned property. Farther down by the running waters of the river is the old well house. We’ve seen countless other tunnels like this one get renovated and become part of walking trails. But it does actually go back a ways. There was a bit of tagging here and there. They followed this road all by themselves for several miles, wondering if they were still going in the right direction. Holes in the old rotting ceiling allow you a peak at the clear blue sky. Until the world as we all knew it came to an abrupt end. We found a different one a short drive away. The whole place honestly feels like the skeletal remains of what once was. It’s hard to stay positive in this situation, but we’re going to do our best. Take a break and read about all of your favorite locations that made the Best of New England Hall of Fame. Like warning signs. It was then that we decided it was time to leave. I had a rehearsal/table read up in Amherst early one Saturday morning, and decided to stop for a hike on my way back. There it was again. By the 1970’s, the bridge over the Wachusett Reservoir had been demolished. But this time of great success was not meant to last. It was about a mile in before we came upon the abandoned ski slope. But if you keep your wits about you, it’s all in good fun. You can lie awake in the dark for hours. So I went looking on Google Maps, only knowing that this place resided along the Salmon River. But our dog sure does love the company. Two years ago this summer, we went looking for a place called the Foam Dome. It was built going through a hill and heading toward a bridge going over the nearby Wachusett Reservoir. This is a place that has come to go by many names. The federal government created many camps such as this one across the country, in hopes of quelling the mass migration of drifters looking for work. She now sits all alone and abandoned. If you get that reference, then we can definitely be friends. Whatever was left behind must have been demolished. It is haunting. The days are turning darker. But eventually the old camp loomed out of the forest. The grounds were eventually sold off to the local government and added onto the Mount Tom State Park area. Into some real danger. The slope itself is steep as bloody Hell. But believe it or not, though, vandalism does not seem to be much of an issue. The limelight faded. But it was never quite the same. They are housed in a kennel outside of the Biological Science unit in the UConn Forest. It was a long and icy climb to the ruins. The story caught national attention. It made our hike a bit longer, but the forest out here truly is captivating. Just for the fun of it. And poor Lassie and Wilk were stuck inside. But like the word “abstruse,” just because you’d never heard of it before doesn’t make it any less interesting. Graffiti is everywhere. We did our research. It is also a place of immense mystery and magic. Unfortunately, Westledge School came under new ownership in 1978. Every year from Spring through Fall, we grow all of our own vegetables. I’ve done a lot of research, but it has been inconclusive. Things will start to get colder. And for that I apologize. Over the years, the house fell into complete disrepair. To some, it is known as “Tory’s Prison.” There is an urban legend that abounds that this place was once a prison for British sympathizers during the Colonial Era. And you wonder what this place must’ve looked like way back when. The bars are still on the windows. You’ve heard it on our site. And because of the abundance of water in the White Mountains, there was no shortage of water-powered mills in the region. Plus we have covered pretty much every major abandoned place here in Connecticut. Things appear and disappear. Trust me on that. We caught them in a photograph just standing there, staring at us. We started off down the long winding trail and into the woods. Sure they do. As far as I know, visiting is completely legal. The old machinery is really cool, and makes me wonder how/why it was all left to rot. For the curious tourist or believer in the supernatural, here are four large abandoned hospitals in New England. You want people to listen to your stories and feel your voice. And frankly, fuck 2020. But that doesn’t mean you should give up. It is creepy. But then, up on the quiet road, a lone car pulled up. But there is one place here that disrupts this tranquility…. But the abandoned Willimantic Thread Mill is certainly creepy. Eventually, they came upon a long, narrow, dirt road. But it doesn’t really work like that. Now part of the state's parks system, this quarry produced granite for monuments and commercial buildings up until the 1960s, when it was unceremoniously abandoned. They’ve also been ones that nobody in our community really pays attention to. It was also not an easy trek to explore. The place feels quite lonely. But it was here that the road came to an end at the head of the Wantastiquet Trail. Chunks of wood, plaster, and brick coat the ground in droves. Just like the Foam Dome trip, we had everything planned out. But like I said way back in the long long ago, thus is life. I asked Lassie if she had either, but she had the same answer. With a triangular roof and decorated with some bizarre oddities, the building is rather interesting. Our directions took us down a quiet country road to a road-side dirt parking lot. A little ways passed the fireplace is a large pipe in the ground. Summer has come and passed. We’ve mostly covered old relics of the past that have been lost in the woods. It’s been said a thousand times before, and a thousand times again, but this has been a rough year for all of us. Not for a long time. Miles away from our destination, I feared that this place could eclipse the Foam Dome as the greatest disappointment we’d ever had on our quest into the unknown. So…that kind of narrows down where we can and cannot visit right now. Almost. Until the dark times. Maybe we were feeling a tad rusty. Though she has since been added as a Historical Landmark, that doesn’t do much to stop the hands of time. The great stone borders glisten with moss and mist. And sometimes, you just have to do a little bit of wandering until you find your way. And as our urban exploring season winds down, we here at Abandoned Wonders are very much looking forward to taking some time off. I’m not quite sure why. Therapy helps, to a certain extent. It severely derailed the genetic experimentation program, but it attempted to continue none the less. And as a writer, you want people to read your words. First built during the Great Depression, this area was a refugee for the weary travelers of the darkest times in American history. To others, it is simply known as “Old Stone Jailhouse.” This hallowed ground’s true name is in fact Camp Nepaug. It is truly an adventurer’s gutter. Not too hot. And nothing is ever what it seems out here. But when confronted with the in-season $10 parking fee, I decided to save it for another time. Abandoned New England book. I’m talking animal abuse. I eventually found it on the street view. It makes finding them that much more fun. They have both been defaced with graffiti, and completely barren inside. Abandoned Mills, White Mountains – During the 1800s and early 1900s, cut-up mills, grist mills, sawmills, and various other types of mills were found throughout New Hampshire. Here, we found the wrecks of several old cars. But you never really rest. And we both still believe in following the physical distancing guidelines. Satisfied with their prospects, they bid farewell to the fabled abandoned castle. And thus, the Westledge Ski Slope was no more. While reading about this place, we soon discovered the rich history of the Helen Lohman House. Walk with me. Aside from the rope tow shed, which is really cool, there isn’t much to see here. The Spruces. It’s all just an illusion. The roof is no more, and one side of wall has totally collapsed. Stress the word most. Elijah Andrus founded Gay City as a community of Hartford religious zealots in 1796 . There are plenty of NO TRESPASSING and KEEP OUT signs along the buildings. There may not be too much to see here, but the ruins of this place certainly are special. There’s water dripping down the stone siding. And I had never even heard of this place until a few months ago. It was time to leave once again. But like I said earlier, this was our first taste of real urban exploration in awhile. The old archways still project a strong sense of grandeur. Hanton City, Smithfield, Rhode Island. When I had first heard of this place, I didn’t think there would be much to it. We both got really bad vibes from this place. I have always wanted to, but never really found the right place for it. For a time, I thought they were just looking at the tunnel. As one of the oldest parts of the United States, New England lays claim to many abandoned (and allegedly cursed or haunted) buildings. Lassie does what she can around the house. You feel like you might actually be getting some rest. It reminded me very much of The Decent, especially with the constant echo of dripping water. Life will lead you astray. The place is also full of birds and chipmunks, who have clearly moved back in to reclaim this forgotten facility as their own. Religious leaders served rum to all male members of the community during religious services, either to lure worshipers … They had been East. The UConn Forest truly is just so vast and so full of the weirdest things imaginable. There is a strong odor of fresh spray paint in the air, which is certainly concerning. It absolutely boggles my mind that the old tea kettle is still there and nobody has taken it. Just in time for Fall, too. She named the preserve after the way she found her garden after every winter. But using the old wheel systems as breakpoints, we eventually made it to the top and began our hike back to the car. There will be tribulations. Unfortunately, few of these are still standing. You’re the only one who can get yourself to sleep, but just can’t seem to find the path. With the end of the industrial revolution, things began to grow quiet. Just a long, dead end, dirt road that was once a driveway. All sorts of trash and filth float amongst it. But you see, forgetting can be a hard thing to do. The skeletal grey remains blend in quite well with the surrounding woods. But in the late 1960’s, she decided to move on from the property. We slipped and slid all the way up. The ruins sit along the banks of the river, so there is no real way to hike in. And usually for good reason. It’s hard to tell how big this place was, given how overgrown the underbrush is. And to be honest, the abandoned Arcadia Campground really didn’t disappoint. But then these seconds turn into minutes. We continued on none the less. Not really knowing what we were going to find out here in the woods. If there’s a used bookstore or a vintage toy store in the vicinity, we’ll check that out as well. An unexpected snow had fallen the day before, and we were both getting a serious case of Cabin Fever. This was no ordinary hike. Frogs, both dead and alive, decorate the muddier patches of water. But we can’t do any of that right now. But when the season changes, there is no stopping the suns from setting. Clusters of rotting old cabins stand silently together. In the woods off the Hanton City Trail between Auxiliary … From there, it was a two mile hike in to the abandoned Eyrie House. There is just a certain amount of mystique to it that makes you wonder what these old ruins once looked like way back when. There will be set-backs. The other was a glamorous actress. The result of twenty years of exploration and documentation, this book features a rare look at structures that no longer serve their original purpose and have been otherwise forgotten. A few minutes later, Lassie and Wilk found themselves gazing on a very unique site: the abandoned ruins of Madame Sherri’s Castle. Like an autumn leaf, haven fallen from her tree and slowly eroding into nothingness. I don’t usually curse on this site, but I think it’s necessary this time. If anyone reading this has any information, please do share it with us. But few things get your heart pumping as much as slipping into a place like this one. And they were good at it. I love a good hike and a little history. They were sure to be prepared for this long journey. So for now, we’re just going to call it the Arcadia Campground. And so, in the final days of Fall 2020, we made our journey out to the abandoned remains of Camp Nepaug. But on our last stop of the year, we visited a place that appears to have been forgotten a long time ago. A lot of them have been in the middle of the woods. Oh yes. If you don’t, you can and will spend hours combing through the forest looking for it. The parties all drew to a close. “Is that even a real word?” Yes. Flash forward to 2020. You really have to want to see this place to make the long journey out to see it. Some things we can’t get to grow, but we try anyway. This is one of those rare pieces where I ask that you discontinue reading. But I still haven’t found anything on this place. You make sure they get enough sun. The walls are coated with graffiti and the floor is all dirt. And we will finally be able to venture outside of Connecticut. Our story begins a long time ago in a mythical place called New York City. It’s an unusual word, isn’t it? Many rose again as apartment buildings or municipal offices. They took off as soon as I waved at them. It’s rare for me to do this, but I feel like I must speak my mind. Though parts of it are weathering away, the great soul and wonder of this place stands strong. Whether they’re legitimate or not is irrelevant. I have never liked my birthday. We don’t like to leave the state, as we both still have jobs to do. The abandoned jailhouse is really cool. It was a simple property, with a small country house, running water, and a cozy fireplace to curl up next to on those cold nights. We have covered several other ski slopes in the past that followed very similar paths and suffered the same fates as Westledge. Today was no exception. I love to hike and search for my abandoned places. Most may not believe such things, but I do. It just sat there. It was truly a mix of ruins and wonder. We were both quiet on our long walk back to the car. We mapped out our location.
